Let The Bicentennial Torch Relay Begin

Subscribe NowOne of the most high-profile events connected to Indiana’s Bicentennial Celebration will begin Friday morning at the original state capital in Corydon. The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay will involve more than 2,000 torchbearers traveling through all 92 counties.
The relay will finish October 15 at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis. First Lady Karen Pence and Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb will join other state leaders and Bicentennial Committee members for a kickoff ceremony at 10:00 a.m. at the Corydon Capitol State Historic Site.
In March, the route was unveiled and it will cover 3,200 miles, passing through 260 cities and towns. The commission says the route will also touch 17 state and national parks, nine lakes and rivers, 27 national, state and local sites of historic significance and 22 colleges and universities.
Torchbearers representing every Indiana county were announced in June. The torch itself was designed and constructed by engineering students at Purdue University. A team of Ball State students will capture the entire journey and the torchbearers and later create a documentary about the event.
