The organization has awarded a grant to the Greentown Historical Society to help nominate the Greentown Commercial Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places.
Indiana Landmarks says the new district will include 30 historic structures, including the town’s City Hall, which includes the Greentown Glass Museum. Being included in the National Register would make the district eligible for grants and tax credits that could be used for restoration projects.
"The district will be a source of pride for residents and business owners and will be useful in promoting the town," said Rachel Jenkins with the Greentown Historical Society. "This would not have been possible without the expertise and assistance from Indiana Landmarks."
Indiana Landmarks says it has worked with the Greentown Historical Society on other preservation projects, including the rehabilitation of two buildings into the Greentown History Center. The GHS also used an Indiana Landmarks grant to help save the former Star Theater by commissioning an architectural feasibility study. A member of the historical society has since acquired the building and plans to rehabilitate it.
