More Layoffs at Gary Works

United States Steel Corp. (NYSE: X) has laid off nearly 40 more workers at its Gary Works operation. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report United Steelworkers District 7 has vowed to fight the decision.

The layoffs continue a difficult stretch for U.S. Steel workers in northwest Indiana. More than 1,000 in the Region lost their jobs last year.

USW District 7 Director Mike Millsap tells The Times the layoffs were recommended by Chicago-based McKinsey & Co., a consulting firm working with U.S. Steel on cost reduction measures. He says the companies are looking to use more outside contractors, which the union opposes because of safety concerns.

The publication reports a U.S. Steel spokeswoman has declined to comment on the layoffs.

The global company lost $1.5 billion last year and has reported annual losses in five of the last six years.
