The intermodal facilities are the first in the U.S. for the Mexican company and could eventually employ more than 100 in Allen and Porter counties.
Transpoint is planning to invest $13.5 million into the Fort Wayne hub and a company official tells Inside INdiana Business the Valpo facility will cost about 80 percent of that. Chief Operating Officer Duard Ballard says it will be built on a 94-acre property off of U.S. 30. and initially employ about 15. He says at full-strength, the northwest Indiana facility could eventually have three shifts and up to 45 workers.
By contrast, the larger Fort Wayne hub, which is being hailed by Mayor Tom Henry as a "focal point for distribution," could grow to employ up to 64 within three years.
The Indiana hubs will be part of Transpoint’s global container network moving cargo from the Far East via Chicago and beyond. The company partners with the Chicago, Ft. Wayne & Eastern Railroad system.
