Indy Organizations Awarded TechHire Grants

Subscribe NowThe U.S. Department of Labor has awarded nearly $6 million to two Indianapolis organizations as part of its TechHire Partnerships grant program. The White House says the goal of the program is to create a pipeline of talent in order to bring new jobs to local economies.
The first grant, worth $3.2 million, was given to the "GOAL! Growing Opportunities in America for Latinos!" program, which seeks to enhance English language and advanced manufacturing technical skills for 400 Hoosiers. The project, being led by AFL-CIO Labor Institute for Training Inc., will "leverage English acquisition instruction from Indiana Department of Workforce Development, contextualize literacy courses in the manufacturing sector, and raise awareness of manufacturing opportunities in the Latino community."
Ivy Tech Community College has been awarded $2.6 million for its Ivy Tech Hires program which will give training and internships to 330 disadvantaged youth and young adults, in order to introduce them to the IT and advanced manufacturing sectors. The 16-week Ivy Tech Hires program includes soft skills job readiness boot camps and accelerated training, lead them to employment or advancement in IT or advanced manufacturing jobs.
The DOL awarded a total of $150 million to 39 partnerships throughout the country. President Obama launched TechHire in 2015 in an effort to train workers for well-paying jobs within months.
