Historical Society Awards First-Ever Grants

Subscribe NowThe Indiana Historical Society has awarded its first-ever Heritage Support Grants to 25 organizations in 21 counties. The nonprofits will use the $500,000 will support projects ranging from indoor and outdoor building repairs to historic painting restorations to the digitization of collections.
The IHS says the Heritage Support Grant program was established with the help of a grant from Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. The organization will award $2.5 million to nonprofits throughout Indiana in at least five cycles through 2019.
"The role of our local history heroes cannot be overstated," said John Herbst, president and chief executive officer of the IHS. "IHS estimates more than 900 Indiana organizations hold collections that total more than 20 million historical objects and 424,000 feet of historical documents. We are proud to support their work in communities across Indiana."
To be eligible for the grant, organizations must be incorporated as nonprofits, be history-related or propose a project that is history-focused and must have an annual budget of less than $300,000.
