If the offers are accepted, the city says it will make site improvements and increase trail connectivity.
The properties have a total appraised value of nearly $180,000. The city says the purchase of the first property will allow for the extension of Pleasant Creek Trail which would provide connectivity between Old City Park and the Greenwood Amphitheater and pedestrian access between Old City Park and the Greenwood Community Center.
On the second property, the city says it would make various improvements, including sidewalk widening and additional parking in the area near the city’s famed Mrs. Curl Ice Cream Shop. Mayor Mark Myers says the proposed improvement projects will continue the city’s downtown revitalization efforts.
"This project addresses a short-term need but also fits into our vision for the future for downtown Greenwood," said Myers. "Walkability, safe pedestrian access and congregation, connectivity – this is the formula for a successful downtown, and we’re going to keep identifying and pursuing opportunities to revitalize the heart of Greenwood."
The approval from the RDC allows for negotiations to begin with the owner of the properties. The city says that process will begin immediately, with hopes for final agreements within the next two months.
Earlier this month, Myers announced a list of $21 million in capital and road projects that are slated to be completed this year. Last month, the city began its $1.5 million downtown facade project, which is expected to be complete by late fall or early winter.
