Communications has announced a new internship program in honor of legendary broadcaster Amos Brown, who passed away in November. The advertising and public relations firm says the internship encourages minority students to seek careers in communications.
The internship program is a partnership among Hirons, Radio One and the Indianapolis Recorder newspaper. Hirons says the internship will also support minority recruitment efforts for the companies and throughout central Indiana.
"Amos Brown was a legendary figure within media and the entire Indianapolis community," said Hirons chief executive officer Tom Hirons. "This program is our opportunity to honor his importance, not only to journalism, but to the entire communications industry."
The programs first intern has already been selected; Taylor Morton, a Ball State University senior, will work in Hirons’ communications management department and will also complete a capstone project with Radio One and the Indianapolis Recorder.
Morton was chosen by a selection committee that included Amos Brown’s sister, Oveda Brown, among others.
"This is a wonderful recognition for my brother and yet another way his presence will continue to be felt in Indianapolis," said Oveda Brown. "Amos impacted the lives of so many people, especially students interested in pursuing journalism and communications, and I’m so happy that impact will continue."
Hirons says it plans to offer the internship every spring, summer and fall. The company says once the interns complete the program, they will serve as ambassadors for the program and mentors to future interns.
