Over half of nearly 700 respondents say they plan to hire more workers over the next two years, but an increasing number of executives are also leaving positions unfilled because of a lack of qualified candidates.
Though there were no "dramatic" changes from the last couple of years, the chamber says "several downward trends continued." These include the aforementioned unfilled job figures, which stands at 45 percent of employer, up from 43 percent and 39 percent in 2015 and 2014. Another number on the rise is the share of employers surveyed that say filling their work force and meeting talent needs is either their biggest challenge or "challenging but not their biggest challenge," which now represents 76 percent of respondents.
The survey also asked about topics such as educational requirements for open positions, availability of tuition reimbursement and personal qualities desired by employers.
In all, 671 chamber members and customers participated in the survey, which is in its ninth year. Sponsored by WGU Indiana, the survey is conducted by the chamber and its foundation.
