IDOE Names STEM Certified Schools

Subscribe NowThe Indiana Department of Education has named nine new STEM Certified Schools and one STEM Certified Program. The designation means schools, or programs within schools, "demonstrate a commitment to providing high-quality STEM programs."
The STEM Certification Program has only been in existence for two years. So far, 19 schools or programs have received the certification, which lasts for five years, at which point the school or program has the chance to renew.
"Programs like these provide students with the tools they need to be successful after high school, whether they go to college or enter the workforce," said Glenda Ritz, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. "Moving forward, my Department is committed to working with all schools to ensure that every student has the opportunity to be exposed to high-quality STEM programs."
The IDOE says STEM Certified Schools must employ inquiry and project based learning, community engagement, student-centered classrooms, and out-of-school STEM opportunities.
This year’s STEM Certified Schools include:
- Grandview Elementary School – Monroe County Community School Corporation
- Indian Creek Elementary School – MSD Lawrence Township
- Lafayette Sunnyside Intermediate School – Lafayette School Corporation
- Madison Primary Center – South Bend Community School Corporation
- Area 31 Career Center – MSD Wayne Township
- The Career Academy of South Bend
- Maple Crest Middle School – Kokomo School Corporation
- New Tech Institute – Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation
- Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center
- The STEM Academy at Penn High School – Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation (program)
