Citizens Requesting Steam Rate Reduction

Citizens Energy Group has filed a request for a six percent overall reduction in rates for its steam distribution system in downtown Indianapolis. The utility says the proposed reduction is possible due to cost savings from the conversion of the Perry K Steam Plan from coal to natural gas.

Citizens’ request is now before the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. If approved the rate reduction would take effect in early 2017 and the exact impact on customers would vary based on consumption and other factors, according to the utility.

"We are very pleased to reduce rates for our steam customers in the downtown area," said Jeffrey Harrison, president and CEO of Citizens Energy Group. "We know lower rates can help our steam customers reduce their costs and enhance their competitiveness in a world marketplace. The conversion of our Perry K Steam Plant to natural gas represents a big win for our customers and the environment."

The conversion of the steam plant was completed in June 2014. Citizens says the conversion has resulted in a 99 percent reduction in sulfur dioxide emissions, a 95 percent reduction in particulate emissions, and a 77 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions.
