The executive director of Visit Hendricks County says a proposed $25 million Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in Plainfield would help attract a "completely different demographic." Plans call for 175 rooms, 25,000 square-feet of meeting and conference space and a restaurant, which Jaime Bohler Smith says will appeal to organizers of larger association meetings and sports tournaments. The project will be located on property owned by the Hendricks County Tourism Commission, which has been working to develop the land for more than a decade.

Bohler Smith says "the Commission’s objective since we purchased the land over 10 years ago was to attract a project of this scope. We couldn’t be more pleased with this agreement and its significance to the future of tourism in this county as it will be a major destination driver to our community." She says other developments have been discussed in this location, but it was important to identify "the right project."

She says the impact of tourism on the county has grown each year since Indianapolis hosted the Super Bowl in 2012. Bohler Smith tells Inside INdiana Business Visit Hendricks County will soon provide a full report detailing another year-over-year increase in its most recent visitor spending count.

Visit Hendricks County says the 175-room Embassy Suites will employ around four dozen and have an annual payroll of nearly $1.5 million.

Construction could begin before October and wrap up in 2018. Indianapolis-based SUN Development & Management Corp. is leading the project. Chairman Bharat Patel says the center is expected to generate $6 million in room revenue and $480,000 annually in innkeeper’s tax.

Bohler Smith says she the full development agreement with the county is the next step and she hopes a $6 million bond agreement for the project will be complete in May.
