Arnold changed his mind after announcing last month that he would seek re-election. He was chosen in 2007 to fill the vacancy left by Sen. Anita Bowser, who had passed away. He was then elected to his own term in 2008 and re-elected in 2012.
"You know what, it’s enough. It’s time. It’s just time," Arnold told The Times. "It’s time for me to spend some quality time with my wife. I feel good with my decision. I’m happy. I just thought it was a good time in 2016 with 50 years of public service."
Arnold told the publication he has no intention of endorsing a successor and is confident the Democratic party can hold onto his seat. Prior to serving in the Senate, Arnold was a part of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department, eventually being elected as sheriff in 1999.
Earlier this month, Senators Earline Rogers (D-3) and Patricia Miller (R-32) also announced they will not seek re-election in November.
