Fort Wayne-based Indiana Michigan Power is now in the solar business. The utility says its first solar power generating station, the Deer Creek Solar Facility near Marion, is operating and will power the equivalent of 350 homes each year.

I&M President Paul Chodak says "this is a significant milestone for Indiana Michigan Power and our customer. Our large-scale solar facility in Marion and the three I&M is building in the Michiana area in the coming year are an important achievement now, and they collectively mark an important first step into a future that includes more renewable solar energy for I&M customers."

The milestone follows the recent groundbreaking of a solar facility near Mishawaka. Along with New Carlisle and Michigan locations, the new operations are slated to begin generating power by year’s end. The four facilities could generate up to 15 megawatts annually, which is the equivalent of 2,000 homes.

The utility’s generation portfolio includes solar, nuclear, hydro, coal and wind, which is supplied through power purchase agreements., wind. I&M has more
than 589,000 customers.
