Ritz Calls Senate Proposal ‘Common Sense’ Legislation

Subscribe NowIndiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz is backing a bill proposed in the Indiana Senate. SB 200, which was authored by Dennis Kruse (R-14), includes provisions to "hold harmless" A-F accountability grades for schools due to changes in ISTEP+ testing procedures.
Kruse serves as chair of the Senate Education Committee. The bill would protect grades from the 2014-2015 school year from being marked lower than in 2013-2014.

In a statement, Ritz said:
"For the last 18 months, I have been advocating for this type of flexibility as we transitioned to our new standards and assessments. I want to thank Chairman Kruse, as well as democratic and republican legislative leadership in both the Senate and the House for their work on this vital issue. The current version of Senate Bill 200 is common sense legislation that allows schools time to adjust to our new standards and prevents unnecessary economic harm to our schools and communities. This bill has my strong support."
SB 200 says the state department of education "may not apply the consequences unless the school is placed in the lowest category or designation" for the 2014-2015 academic year.
