The seminary says the announcement is the result of a need to earn the degree by working pastors.
The seminary can accept up to 21 students in the first group. Interested students must have a master of divinity or an equivalent degree and be working pastors.
The coursework will be a combination of online and campus learning. The degree is designed for working pastors to complete it while still serving their congregations. The seminary says it is hoping to see applicants from around the world.
“We hope to have many applicants, and we are looking for women and men who are engaged in ministry and who seek to sharpen their skills to share Christ’s message in the 21st century,” said Bob Whitesel, D.Min., Ph.D., professor of missional leadership. “It’s a highly practical degree. My hope is that students who have been exposed to this will create this collage of ministry that will transform their lives, their ministry and transform the lives of others.”
The seminary was not able to offer a doctorate degree until it graduated its first master’s class and those students were practicing ministers for three years. More information on the new degree can be found here.
