IKEA representatives will join Mayor Scott Fadness and other city officials at Fishers City Hall to detail where and when the store will be built, as well as how many job opportunities are expected. Currently, the nearest IKEA stores are in the Chicago and Cincinnati suburbs.
The company, which bills itself as the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, has been patiently expanding its Midwest presence, especially Illinois, in recent years. Last year, IKEA acquired a 49-turbine wind farm in Hoopeston, Illinois and is in early construction phases of a 1.4 million square-foot distribution hub in Joliet, Illinois that could be complete sometime in 2017. It currently has two distribution centers in the U.S., located on the East and West Coasts. Earlier this year, it also announced plans for a new retail location in a Columbus, Ohio suburb, which is expected to employ hundreds when it opens in a couple of years.
IKEA has boosted its emphasis on renewable energy sources for its typically-massive U.S. stores. Late last year, the company announced it was partnering with South Bend-based Inovateus Solar LLC on a 765-panel solar array on the roof of a Michigan location.
A press conference is set for 10:30 at the Fishers City Hall Auditorium.
