Major Moves 2020 Project to Hit Milestone

Subscribe NowTransportation and safety officials will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday for the first project of the state’s $400 million Major Moves 2020 initiative. The nearly $36 million worth of work by Milestone Contractors LP involves six lanes along I-65, south of Indianapolis. It includes new auxiliary lanes, overpass upgrades and drainage improvements.
This initial portion of the project broke ground in March. The Indiana Department of Transportation says pavement operations are set to be complete Friday, but work on the shoulders, which doesn’t require closing lanes, will be finished later.
Friday’s event will also kick off the Save-A-Life campaign to raise awareness of road safety near construction sites. The program is sponsored by Road Construction Awareness Corp., a coalition formed after several deaths last year in work zones.
Major Moves 2020 is a key initiative of Governor Mike Pence’s administration and a total of $400 million was approved by the General Assembly in 2014 to fund it. Half the funding was released immediately and another half was made available after state budget considerations.
Major Moves 2020 involves what INDOT calls "high-value" projects throughout the state. In addition to the Major Moves 2020 efforts, INDOT is working to complete other separate, large-scale works, including the I-69 extension between Evansville and parts south of Indianapolis, the Ohio River Bridges project in southern Indiana and continuing work on U.S. 31 between central and northern Indiana.
