Indiana University professor Richard DiMarchi has been elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine, considered one of the highest honors in health and medicine. DiMarchi joined IU after 22 years as a senior research scientist at Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co. (NYSE: LLY).

Election to the academy recognizes individuals who have "demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service."  The organization was previously known as the Institute of Medicine.

DiMarchi discovered the designer insulin Humalog while at Lilly. He co-founded Marcadia Biotech, which was eventually sold to Roche for more than $500 million. DiMarchi also co-founded Calibrium LLC, which was purchased by Novo-Nordisk earlier this year. Last year, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

He holds more than 100 patents and has co-authored more than 150 scientific papers.DiMarchi has been chair of the Peptide Therapeutics Foundation since 2008 and has served as a scientific advisor to several life science companies and venture funds.

This year’s election to the National Academy of Medicine included 70 new members and 10 international members.
