Mesker Park Zoo Announces New Attractions

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and Zoo Director Amos Morris have unveiled plans to install an aviary and a carousel ride that features endangered animals. The zoo hopes to raise $3 million for the project. The new attractions are expected to debut in May 2016.
Guests will be able to walk through the Budgie Aviary exhibit and interact with about 200 colorful birds native to Australia. Guests will also be able to purchase food and feed the birds from their hands.
The Engelbrecht Carousel will feature 30 hand-crafted endangered carousel animals.
“These new features will make Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden even more exciting and will attract visitors from throughout the Tri-State and beyond, including new visitors and those who may not have been to our zoo for many years. The carousel and budgie aviary, along with other popular exhibits like the Komodo Cove and Amazonia Rainforest, solidifies Mesker Park’s as one of the top family destinations in Indiana,” Mayor Winnecke said.
“The Engelbrecht Carousel and Budgie Aviary are the next projects in a plan of growth for the zoo over the next 10 years. Following this success, the zoo will almost immediately begin campaigning to raise dollars for a penguin exhibit and then begin the largest project in the plan, Adventure Africa. The future improvements are guided by an Action Plan that will continue to upgrade the zoo in the future and are made possible by our very generous collaboration between the City of Evansville, zoo supporters and friends,” Morris said.
