Purdue University is one of 11 schools throughout the country to share in nearly $9 million from the U.S. Department of Education. The members of the University Innovation Alliance will use the funding for a four-year research study on how advising impacts graduation rates for low-income and first-generation students.

The study will involve 10,000 students who take part in analytics-based advising efforts at the UIA universities. Organizers say the project will measure the benefits of "systematic, proactive advising." Selected students will receive services including individualized academic maps and targeted advising interventions to help when they are struggling.

The University Innovation Alliance was launched one year ago with the goal of helping more students from all socioeconomic backgrounds graduate from college. The members are:
