The organization and newly-formed Boyle Racing Project LLC say it will likely cost $300,000 to restore the building, which was run by racing team owner Mike Boyle from the 1920s through the 1940s.
Marion County Commissioners voted last week to give Indiana Landmarks ownership of the Boyle Racing garage. Indiana Landmarks President Marsh Davis says the building "is in terrible shape," but says the organization is "100 percent behind this rescue." Boyle Racing Project LLC is seeking nonprofit status and will take the lead on the project.
The organization says Mike Boyle, a prominent Chicago labor leader, employed drivers including Wilbur Shaw, Cliff Woodbury and "Wild Bill" Cummings. Shaw won the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940.
The building is located at 1701 Gent Street in Indianapolis, north of the 16 Tech development.
