Grant to Target Diverse Health Work Force

Subscribe NowIndiana University’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences has landed a nearly $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The funding will support an initiative to create a more diverse health care work force.
The Indiana University Health Careers Opportunity Program is designed to provide disadvantaged students with academic and social skills to help them graduate from health professions programs. The school says a diverse pipeline of health care workers is essential to provide care to growing minority communities.
The project will target Indianapolis-area student populations including minorities, low-income, veterans and adult students. The school will begin activities this fall to to support those students, including weekend academies, pre-health enrichment programs and summer camps.
Eskenazi Health will partner with the school on the effort. In a release, Chief Executive Officer Mark Bustamante said, "We highly value progress in recruiting health care workers and providers from the local communities as they are most effective at understanding and meeting the particular needs of their own communities.”
