Peter Schickel Way is a 2.5-mile stretch of roadway connecting Interstate 64 at the Lanesville interchange to State Road 64 just west of Georgetown, a town of about 4,000 people west of Louisville, Kentucky.
The $37 million roadway, built in three phases over a two-decade period, is expected to drive economic development at the Lanesville interchange, the Harrison County Economic Development Corp. said this week. An Amazon distribution center is now in the area, and a housing development called The Woods of Heritage Hills is under construction and will eventually include 141 single-family homes.
“With the I-64 connection, this roadway accesses the Lanesville Business Park, which is just 13 miles from Louisville, Kentucky, making this area an outstanding location for residential and business development,” Harrison County Commissioners President Nelson Stepro said in a news release.
The opening of Peter Schickel Way is the culmination of efforts that began with the Lanesville Interchange Master Plan adopted in 2001 to promote economic development, the EDC said. Amazon in 2021 selected the area for one of its warehouses, and the facility opened in September 2023.
“The development team that helped bring Amazon to the Lanesville Interchange in Harrison County specifically identified Peter Schickel Way as an asset for their project,” Harrison County Council Chairman Donnie Hussung said. “Additionally, the expansion of utilities to serve the Amazon distribution center will help support other business and housing developments in the area.”
The road project was funded by the Indiana Department of Transportation, U.S. Federal Highway Administration and the Harrison County government.
