The board also approved the purchase of a new airplane fleet for its Aviation Flight program in Indianapolis.
Johnson’s contract will now run through Dec. 31, 2027. He was selected as VU’s 22nd president in 2015 and has received one-year extensions for the past five years.
The university said the board’s approval of replacing the airplanes in its fleet represents a “significant investment” in the Aviation Flight program.
The plan includes the purchase of nine Cirrus SR20 airplanes for the university’s Aviation Technology Center in Indianapolis for nearly $6.7 million.
VU said it will use nearly $3 million from the sale of its existing fleet of planes, as well as $2.7 million from its plane replacement fund to be used for the purchase of the new aircraft. That leaves a net payout of $927,260 for the new planes.
The board also swore in new trustees Nate Myers and Kate Wise, who were recently appointed to the board by Gov. Eric Holcomb.
