The organization, which oversees programs for the Boy Scouts of America in central Indiana, said Kitchell succeeds Joe Wiltrout, who resigned from the position earlier this month.
Kitchell served as executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Indiana University Health before stepping down in 2019. He was named chair of the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet by Gov. Eric Holcomb in 2022.
The Crossroads of America Council said in a news release that Kitchell’s track record in the public and private sector “uniquely positions” him for the interim role.
“Scouting creates opportunity for boys and girls of all backgrounds to develop the character and skills to lead our communities in the future,” Board Chair Deana Haworth said. “Ryan is the leader we need to ensure we are providing an excellent experience for current Scouts and their families while prioritizing our ability to reach families across central Indiana with the invitation to join us.”
Kitchell himself is a former board member for the Crossroads of America Council and is the father of an Eagle Scout, the organization said. He said he was honored to receive the appointment.
“The impact of Scouting on the life of a young person cannot be overstated,” Kitchell said. “While some may be anxious about what will happen when this generation takes the helm as our leaders, I look at the youth who are in Scouting and the adults who invest in them and am greatly encouraged. The leadership skills they are developing, the character growth they are experiencing, and the community they are building are signs of a great generation in the making.”
In addition to leading the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet, Kitchell serves on the boards of directors for OneAmerica Financial in Indianapolis, Evansville-based Old National Bank, and Help at Home in Chicago, among other organizations.
He was also named to IBJ Media’s Indiana 250 in each of the last three years.
Joe Wiltrout was named CEO of the Crossroads of America Council in 2017. The organization did not immediately give a reason for his resignation.
The council said details on its search to find a full-time CEO will be announced soon.
