Indiana University has announced a new program designed to focus on underrepresented minorities working on graduate degrees. Terrell Strayhorn is the first scheduled speaker for the program, which is part of IU President Michael McRobbie's Graduate Diversity Initiative. October 31, 2014

News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A new Indiana University student-centered program focusing on underrepresented minorities in graduate education will launch a speaker series Monday, Nov. 3.

Created by Indiana University Bloomington and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis as part of President Michael A. McRobbie’s Graduate Diversity Initiative and hosted by the Graduate Mentorship Center, the Trailblazers and Innovators in Underrepresented Minorities in Graduate Education Seminar Speaker Series will feature Terrell Strayhorn as its first speaker.

Strayhorn, director of the Center for Higher Education Enterprise and professor of higher education at Ohio State University, will visit the IUPUI and Indiana University Bloomington campuses Nov. 3 to 12. He will share his research; learn more about the institutions and available communities of support on and off campus; and lead active learning sessions for students, faculty and staff to help the success of historically underrepresented and misrepresented populations in education.

His research identifies factors that enable or inhibit the success of historically underrepresented and misrepresented populations in education.

The first seminar, “College Students' Sense of Belonging,” takes place from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law at IUPUI. A community dialogue and reception on “Black Male Recruitment and Retention” takes place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in the IUPUI Campus Center Theatre.

The series is open to faculty, students, staff and the public. Participants are asked to register for the free conference.

Additional information on the focus of Strayhorn's Center for Higher Education Enterprise and its impact will also be available at a session titled “Higher Education's Role in Society: Research as a Catalyst for Social Change” during the Preparing Future Faculty and Professionals annual Pathways conference Friday, Nov. 7, at the NCAA Conference Center in downtown Indianapolis.
