Zach Garcia served as executive director of Wesselman Woods for two years after joining the not-for-profit in 2019 as director of education and later serving as associate executive director, the organization said.
“In just five years, Wesselman Woods has evolved into something truly special,” Garcia said in a news release. “The organization I joined in 2019 is not the same one we see today. We have achieved a new level of stability that allows us to innovate and grow. My time here has been incredible—I have cherished every moment of this transformative chapter for the organization.”
During his tenure, the organization completed the Bernhardt Family Bird Sanctuary, launched a sponsorship initiative for families to participate in summer camps and other programs, created a partnership with Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. to launch a series of youth-based environmental classes, collaborated with the city of Evansville on plans to reforest a former golf course, and initiated the construction of more accessible trails.
“For myself and the rest of the board of directors, I can say that it has been a pleasure to have worked so closely with Zach and the team he has developed,” board President Michelle Ferrero said. “The vision and extraordinary efforts of this entire team has moved Wesselman Woods to the next level.”
The board will begin a search for Garcia’s replacement, the organization said.
Garcia plans to join Faith in Place as its Indiana outreach coordinator. The Chicago-based organization works in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin to advance environmental and racial justice through partnerships with diverse religious groups.
“I have been and remain committed to uplifting and improving the Evansville community,” Garcia said. “I look forward to continuing this work in my new role and positively transforming Indiana.”
