Our partners at WTWO-TV report the $1.5 million facility will house Vigo County Facilities Maintenance, Sheriff’s Office Vehicle Maintenance, document storage for the county’s public defender, and the first Vigo County morgue.
Vigo County Commissioner Mark Clinkenbeard said the facility was built on land already owned by the county and creates a secure location for the public defender documents and the morgue.
“It’s very convenient,” Clinkenbeard told WTWO. “Everyone here does a good job, and it is important to give them the space they need. Instead of our facilities maintenance working out of a parking lot in a temporary building, they have their own space now. It is very gratifying, and we are glad we could do this.”
Vigo County Coroner Dr. Jaine Meyers said the county had previously shared a total of three bays with other counties, and the new morgue gives the county 12 bays that will hopefully be able to be used for the next few decades.
Half of the funding for the project came from American Rescue Plan Act dollars.
