Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the health system is building a five-story addition to the hospital as part of the project.
A spokesperson told the publication the expansion will include interventional, inpatient and specialty care space to expand the abilities of the hospital’s existing facilities.
“Portions of the existing hospital will be renovated to provide larger, realigned support space and public amenities,” the spokesperson said. “The campus site will be reconfigured to provide additional parking and relocate the existing loading dock.”
Franciscan Health Munster currently serves as an acute-care facility with 63 beds and home to 50 medical specialties. In addition to the expansion of the hospital building itself, the project includes the addition of three stories to an existing three-story medical office building on the hospital’s campus.
The health system also has plans for a new facilities plant, parking lot and a relocated helipad, the publication reported.
In all, the project is expected to add about 700,000 square feet of space on the campus, according to a project manager for Tonn & Blank, the construction firm overseeing the project. The goal, they said, is to turn the hospital into a regional medical center for north Lake County.
The Munster hospital expansion follows the late 2022 closure of Franciscan Health Hammond Hospital.
Franciscan said it is not clear at this time how many new jobs will be created with the expansion. A timeline for the project’s completion is also not yet known.
