Energy Sciences Network connects 17 national laboratories and 28 user facilities in a high-performance network and facilitates big-data scientific research. Researchers work on topics like advanced and emerging IP, high-speed optical networking, network automation, cybersecurity as well as data measurement and analysis. Its goal is to “free scientific progress from the constraints of the physical location of instruments, people, computational resources, or data,” according to a news release.
The new office will specifically support the department’s scientific research ecosystem. The network’s central office is the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, which steers the Bloomington location.
“ESnet is excited to establish a central home for our local staff and other Berkeley Lab colleagues that will enable us to connect more easily with the many experts in this community,” ESnet Network Services Lead Jon-Paul Herron said in the release. “We look forward to contributing to Bloomington’s technological and economic development.”
The office will join a tech and innovated-focused community The Mill is working to build. The Bloomington-based not-for-profit startup accelerator said the addition of ESnet is “a significant milestone in the district’s evolution.”
“ESnet is a solid tenant that perfectly aligns with the vision of the Trades District,” John Fernandez, senior vice president of innovation & strategic partnerships at The Mill, said. “Their presence will bring high-paying tech jobs, enhance access to talent from Indiana University, and foster community engagement within the district.”
Fernandez will now head to the city’s redevelopment commission May 20 for approval of the lease and agreement.
