The United Basketball League will begin play in September with teams in Indiana and Texas, according to a news release from the league. The team locations in Indiana are to be in Bloomington, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Lafayette, Muncie, northwest Indiana, South Bend and Terre Haute.
The news release did not specify where in northwest Indiana and noted that some locations may be subject to change.
Announced in January, the league says it is a professional basketball organization in North America geared toward player development in which fans can have an ownership stake in the teams.
One of the co-founders of the league and its vice chairman is Ricky Davis, who played 12 seasons in the NBA for seven teams from 1998-2010.
“As we approach the UBL Showcase in September, we’re thrilled to finally be able to share where this league will have a foothold in both Indiana and Texas,” Davis said in the release. “It’s our belief that these respective cities will play a critical role in growing the game of basketball, infusing the local communities and residents to engage and interact with their team in a unique way based on the foundational tenets of the UBL.”
The eight locations announced for Texas are to be in Austin, College Station, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Waco, Texarkana and Tyler.
The news release said the league will release the names of coaches, staff and other details in the near future.
