The new Keys to Literacy course is available to active pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade educators and will be added to their existing license, the Indiana Department of Education announced this week. Educators can also earn up to $1,200 in stipends for course completion.
The 80-hour course is aligned with the Indiana Academic Standards and the science of reading as well as certified by the International Dyslexia Association.
The funding was set aside last year in the biennial budget for teachers to enroll in the course, take the Praxis licensing exam and earn the endorsement.
“The literacy endorsement, created by state law in 2023, provides educators with tools focused on evidence-based instruction rooted in science of reading, ensuring more students across the state gain essential literacy skills necessary for future success,” Indiana Secretary of Education Katie Jenner said in a news release.
The course will be offered through June 2025. Teachers can start applying to add the endorsement to their license in August 2024.
