New historians appointed in four Indiana counties

Subscribe NowThe Indiana Historical Society and Indiana Historical Bureau have appointed new county historians for Green, Howard, Steuben and Vermillion counties. Additionally, more than two dozen current county historians have been reappointed to new three-year terms.
Paula Baird has been selected as the new Greene County historian. A fifth generation farmer in the county, Baird is currently the president of the Greene County Historical Society.
Gilbert Porter was named the new Howard County historian. Porter is a local history writer in Kokomo who works with the Howard County Historical Alliance and currently produces family history books through his own publishing business.
In Steuben County, Rosalie Harman Spirek has been named the county’s new historian. A former teacher in the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County, Spirek is a charter member of the Steuben County Genealogy Society and serves on the board of the Steuben County Historical Society.
George Sanquenetti has been named the new Vermillion County historian. After retiring in 2011, Sanquenetti served as a park volunteer at the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park and has been actively involved in research and applications for several Indiana State historical markers, including one for a Piankashaw village located near the Vermillion River in Cayuga.
The Indiana Historical Society and Indiana Historical Bureau reappointed the following 26 county historians to new three-year terms:

- Decatur County: Russell Wilhoit
- Delaware County: Karen Vincent
- Dubois County: Arthur C. Nordhoff
- Grant County: William F. Munn
- Madison County: Stephen T. Jackson
- Miami County: Kreig Adkins
- Montgomery County: Dian Moore
- Morgan County: Don R. Adams
- Owen County: Anton W. Neff
- Pike County: Sandra L. McBeth
- Porter County: Kevin M. Pazour
- Posey County: Ray Kessler
- Pulaski County: Mary Conner
- Randolph County: Gregory P. Hinshaw
- Shelby County: William Aughe
- Starke County: Venita Cunningham
- Sullivan County: Donna K. Adams
- Union County: Vicky Logue
- Vigo County: Suzy Quick
- Warren County: Terri L. Wargo
- Warrick County: Anne R. Aurand
- Wayne County: Thomas D. Hamm
- Wells County: James Sturgeon
The two agencies are currently seeking nominations for county historians in Adams, Benton, Jefferson, Johnson, Spencer, Tipton and Whitley counties.
Local historical organizations and libraries in each county can nominate county historians to renewable three-year terms.
