During a media briefing, Henry said he intends to continue serving as mayor though his prognosis “is not exactly encouraging.” His initial scans show the cancer is spreading through his lymph nodes and other organs, he said, but his chemotherapy treatment begins next week.
“I assure you that I have complete confidence in the team in charge of my care and in my ability to carry out my term as your mayor for as long as God sees fit,” Henry said in a statement.
Henry’s wife Cindy Henry died last month, which was a year after she announced her pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
“My family and I are forever grateful for the outpouring of love and affection we have received from our entire community since her passing,” Henry said in the statement. “The respect you have shown to us in honor of Cindy will never be forgotten.”
He asked for privacy and prayers at this time.
