The Expanding What Works grants are designed to enable organizations to expand the Indy Summer Learning Labs initiative to more communities throughout the state.
Indianapolis-based education not-for-profit The Mind Trust and the Lavinia Group in New York will provide five weeks of reading and math lessons for first through ninth-grade students, teacher planning resources, pre- and post-assessments and virtual onboarding training.
This year’s recipients are:
- Boys and Girls Clubs of St. Joseph County: $3,750,000
- Urban League of Northwest Indiana in Gary: $1,125,000
- Creating Avenues for Student Transformation in Salem: $115,073
- Wabash County YMCA: $396,000
“We have put a lot of focus on making sure the financial investments we are making show a return on investment for our students,” Indiana Secretary of Education Katie Jenner said in a news release. “This is a prime example of seeing the impactful results and leveraging what we have learned to scale those opportunities statewide so that more students have access.”
Launched in 2021, the Indy Summer Learning Labs initiative is a program of The Mind Trust that runs from June 17 through July 19 this year. The IDOE said students who participated in the program in 2023 saw a 23% increase in reading scores and 22% increase in math scores.
