Two Plainfield Starbucks unionize; state’s tally hits five

Subscribe NowTwo Plainfield Starbucks locations voted to unionize last week, becoming the first in the Indianapolis metropolitan area to do so and bringing the coffee giant’s tally of unionized Hoosier locations to five.
The Plainfield Commons location on East Main Street voted 12-5 to unionize Friday, according to the National Labor Relations Board case file. The store on Cambridge Way passed its election the day prior.
Full-time and part-time baristas and shift supervisors will be represented by the unions.
Starbucks Workers United, the national collective, announced both stores’ unionizations Friday on X.
Over 380 stores in 41 states and Washington D.C. have unionized since the first did so in Buffalo, New York, in late 2021. Starbucks operates around 9,300 stores; 220 of which are in the Hoosier state.
Three other Indiana stores in Clarksville, Valparaiso and Bloomington have unionized since July 2022.
In December, Starbucks asked to restart bargaining in 2024, which is considered a major reversal for the company. The union said the last bargaining session was May 23.
