Subscribe NowU.S. News & World Report on Tuesday unveiled its list of the 2023-2024 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. The publication evaluated 680 hospitals throughout the country, with more than 300 receiving a “High Performing” designation, including six in Indiana.
The list, which is not a ranking, is based on eight measures of maternity care: C-section delivery rates, early elective delivery rates, overall unexpected newborn complication rates, routine vaginal birth after cesarean delivery rates, exclusive human milk feeding rates, episiotomy rates, birth-friendly practice, and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities.
The Indiana hospitals that received the “High Performing” designation are:
- Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital (Lafayette)
- IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital (Muncie)
- IU Health Bloomington Hospital
- IU Health West Hospital (Avon)
- St. Catherine Hospital (East Chicago)
- The Women’s Hospital (Newburgh)
U.S. News also included a list of hospitals across the country “serving communities that depend on them for access to vital maternity care services.”
The inaugural Maternity Care Access Hospitals list features 74 facilities. Only one Indiana hospital, Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, is included on the list.
“While growing maternity care deserts in parts of the country have left millions of people without local access to maternity care, these U.S. News-recognized Maternity Care Access Hospitals persist in providing this vital service to under-resourced communities,” Jennifer Winston, health data scientist at U.S. News, said in a news release.
