The foundation, based in Muncie, is distributing 36 grants for a total of $5 million with awards supporting an expansion of Cardinal Greenways.
The Cardinal Greenways project was given $100,000 to use toward the “Great American Rail Trail Project” which seeks to create a continuous trail between the east and west coasts.
The first phase of this project looks to connect the Cardinal Greenway to Taylor University’s trail system in Upland, Indiana, with a goal of extending into Gas City Park.
The grants follow previous Ball Brothers Foundation funding for a trailhead, road and canoe/kayak access point along the Mississinewa River on Taylor University’s western campus edge.
“Ball Brothers Foundation and Cardinal Greenways have a rich history, dating back to the trail system’s establishment 30 years ago. We are thrilled to continue this collaboration, knowing that trails play a significant role in enhancing the well-being of our communities,” Ball Brothers Foundation CEO Jud Fisher said in a news release. “This trail expansion will lay the foundation for future growth and opportunities in outdoor recreation throughout the region.”
Health Communities of Henry County received a $35,000 grant for its completion of a 2.6-mile section of the Wilbur Wright Trail in northern Henry County.
This trail extends from the Henry County YMCA to the Wilbur Wright Fish & Wildlife Area with plans eventually to extend into the Cardinal Greenway.
