Lilly Endowment awards $85M to Hoosier youth organizations

Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded $85 million to 187 youth-serving organizations as a part of its Strengthening Youth Programs in Indiana initiative.
Recipients range from organizations working with Hoosier youth in a broad, regional context to those serving kids within specific Indiana towns, counties or cities.
The initiative prioritizes organizations that promote academic, physical and social well-being among youth ages five to 18 years old. Organizations were awarded grants ranging from $16,870 to $1 million.
Examples of services funded through the grants include foster care placement, youth employment, college preparation, grief counseling, tutoring, before- and after-school programs and more.
Many of the funded programs serve minority youth including those who belong to low-income households, are children of color, are from immigrant families, lack adult supervision, or have experienced trauma.
“Indiana’s youth-serving organizations are crucial to the healthy development of children and youth across the state,” Lilly Endowment Vice President for Education Ted Maple said in a news release. “The challenges these organizations have faced in meeting the needs of young people in recent years have made their work increasingly difficult. The Endowment is pleased to support their efforts to strengthen programs and serve more youth more effectively.”
The recent grants build on support the Lilly Endowment provided last year to nine national organizations seeking to enhance their support of Indiana communities.
