The IU Kelley School of Business and School of Dentistry in Indianapolis are partnering on the program so students can finish a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree as well as a Master of Business Administration.
Dual degree students begin their studies in Kelley’s Graduate Certification in Medical Management in the summer of the third year of their doctorate. Afterward, they will take two years to finish both programs at the same time.
“We are excited and proud to introduce this dual degree, which offers an individualized and relevant learning pathway for future dentists,” Julie Manning Magid, vice dean of the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis, said in a press release. “This new degree will combine the study of clinical dentistry with management and leadership education from a top-ranked MBA. It offers these providers the best dental instruction along with the business skills necessary to succeed in today’s complex healthcare environment.”
Business courses will be delivered through the Kelley evening MBA program. Topics include accounting, finance, marketing, strategy, supply chain and health care-specific courses. The program will have four, 12-week quarters with a blend of in-person and hybrid instruction.
The dual degree will require students to complete 205 total credit hours with 163 credit hours in dentistry and 42 in business.
The university reported that 70% of the state’s dentists are trained at IU and they wanted to provide the business know-how to supplement their careers.
“During my time in the dental school, we concentrated our efforts in learning about teeth. We sometimes forget that dentistry works like any other business,” IU School of Dentistry faculty Angela Yepes said. “Having business knowledge is essential for any dentist to thrive. The Evening MBA Program will open your mind to the business of dentistry and complement your scientific knowledge.”
