The $102 million project is near the Indiana Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis between Ohio and New York streets on a narrow strip of land bordering Senate Avenue Garage.
The new 5-story, 133,000-square-foot Indiana State Archives building, when complete, will house some of the state’s oldest and most historically significant documents, including its 1816 and 1851 constitutions.
Such collections are currently being kept in a warehouse on Indianapolis’ east side — originally meant to be a temporary location after a 2001 renovation of the state library.
Officials say the new state archives will provide museum-quality climate controls lacking currently. The building is expected to be ready by late 2025 or early 2026.
