Our partners at WPTA-TV report the decision comes after the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction revoked the licenses for three of the company’s Indiana locations.
The company confirmed last week that the license for the Praxis Landmark Recovery centers in Mishawaka, Bluffton and Carmel were revoked. The move followed three deaths that were reported within a week at the Mishawaka center.
The St. Joseph County Police Department requested that the center’s license be revoked. In addition to the deaths, the department says the facility had been the cause of more than 200 calls to police and fire departments in 2023.
In an email obtained by WPTA, Landmark administrators said the decision to furlough employees was made after learning the company’s Medicaid insurance contracts would be canceled. It also said they wanted to discharge or transfer all patients at the centers.
An exact number of employees affected by the furlough was not immediately stated.
Landmark officials told the station the company is fighting what it called “untrue narratives” about the facility and that more people may die because of the closures, which will begin on Thursday.
“This means that 400 (people) per month of the most vulnerable citizens who rely on Medicaid to access treatment for life threatening addiction will not be able to access care,” Landmark said in a statement. “An average of 4 individuals with addiction die per day in IN. We believe that more (people) will die as a result of this decision to shut down over half of the Medicaid treatment beds in the state.”
