Groundbreaking set for Mishawaka youth sports facility

Subscribe NowOfficials in Mishawaka will join Noblesville-based Card & Associates on Thursday to break ground on a $38 million youth athletics facility. The city says the project enhance the economic impact and quality of life in Mishawaka by creating a major youth sports destination.
The project features the 220,000-square-foot Mishawaka Fieldhouse, which will 10 multipurpose courts and two turf fields, concessions, bleachers and space for a medical tenant.
Visit South Bend Mishawaka said in a news release the facility will generate increased tourism, supporting hotels, restaurants and other businesses.
“From providing a local attraction for all to enjoy to welcoming tens of thousands to Mishawaka each year, the Mishawaka Fieldhouse will be an important asset and robust contributor to the economic vitality of our area,” a spokesperson for the agency said.
The project has received a $5.25 million grant from the state’s Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative, or READI. A local Tax Increment Financing district has been established to support construction, and the St. Joseph County Hotel/Motel Tax will provide $1 million annual to offset operational costs, the city said.
Card & Associates previously developed the Pacers Athletic Center in Westfield, Finch Creek Fieldhouse in Noblesville and Community Sports and Wellness Center in Pendleton. Construction on the Hickory Junction Fieldhouse in Lebanon is ongoing.
“Card & Associates is excited to become part of the Mishawaka and South Bend community to add a vital sports asset,” said Card & Associates CEO Andy Card. “This Fieldhouse will kick-start the area’s transformation to become a vibrant and welcoming destination.”
Construction is slated to begin in the third quarter and take about a year to complete. The city said future construction will take place in later phases, but did not specify what would be added.
The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday.
