Eric Holcomb will join Cliff Chapman, president and CEO of the Central Indiana Land Trust, for a large land conservation announcement on Friday. Few details are available, but the governor’s office said the project involves the Fern Station Nature Preserve in Putnam County.
According to the Putnam County Convention & Visitors Bureau website, efforts have been made in recent months to raise funds to acquire the 570-acres of land that would make up the nature preserve, including a grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and matching funds from The Nature Conservancy.
The land features white oak, beech and hickory trees, ravines that support a wide variety of ferns, and is home to many rare species, including the cerulean, worm-eating and hooded warbler, broad-winged hawk, and Eastern box turtle.
DNR Deputy Director Chris Smith and Sarah Stone with the Putnam County Community Foundation will also be on hand for the announcement, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Greencastle.
