The airport said the funding will help maintain its air cargo service sector’s position as an economic driver in northwest Indiana.
The funding includes $4 million to design, expand and construct a heavy air cargo logistics apron for multiple air cargo services. The remaining $2 million to be used to construct a sanitary sewer line to the expanded air cargo logistics center, which will allow for deicing and uninterrupted air cargo operations, the airport said.
“The past several years have seen significant investment in the airport and development of our air cargo service offerings,” GCIA Authority Vice-Chairman Trent McCain said in written remarks. “The airport is grateful for this funding, as it will bolster infrastructure enhancements to the airport and fuel future aviation sector growth.”
The airport said it now ranks third in the state for the movement of freight, a milestone it achieved after the first year of operations by UPS, which signed a lease agreement in May 2020 and began operations in the fourth quarter of that year.
A groundbreaking date for the projects resulting from the federal funding has not yet been set.
