Construction on a $32 million welcome center at the Indiana/Illinois border along Interstate 70 eastbound is slated to start this summer, according to the Tribune-Star. The current welcome center, which opened 1992, will be demolished.

INDOT expects the project be completed by the fall of 2024 or spring of 2025.

The plans include improvements to interpretive exhibits, trucker restrooms, and expanded parking. INDOT says the new rest area will be compliant with the American with Disabilities Act.

“INDOT is currently executing a 10-year plan to improve interstate rest areas and welcome centers statewide to modernize facilities, construct new buildings, improve parking and convert some to semitrailer truck parking facilities,” said Megan DeLucenay, spokeswoman for INDOT’s Crawfordsville District.

This project is part of INDOT’s broader $500 million plans to improve the state’s 26 rest area or welcome center facilities by the end of fiscal year 2030.
