INDOT says the I-69 Finish Line project, which is the final stretch of the I-69 extension between Indianapolis and Evansville, is now 60% complete.
The new section runs from Martinsville to the new State Road 144 interchange near the Morgan-Johnson County line. It is the longest section of the Finish Line project to open to date, and brings the total number of new interstate for the entire project to 150 miles.
“It’s an exciting time for transportation in Indiana. No other state in the U.S. is building a new interstate,” INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith said in written remarks. “Opening an additional twelve miles of I-69, as well as another interchange is the perfect way to wrap up year three of this project.”
INDOT says drivers can expect an increased speed limit of 70 mph between State Road 44 in Martinsville to just south of the SR 144 interchange.
The I-69 Finish Line project team says work in Morgan and Johnson counties is nearing 90% complete. While construction is set to continue south of Indianapolis, crews will turn their focus to adding lanes on I-465 and building the system-to-system interchange at I-465 and the future I-69 over the next two years.
INDOT says the remainder of the project is on pace to open in late 2024.
