Revive I-70 will seek to create additional travel lanes and make bridge improvements across a more than 20-mile stretch of the interstate west of Cambridge City to the Ohio state line.
INDOT says when complete, the project will expand I-70 from a four-lane interstate with two travel lanes in each direction to a six-lane interstate with three lanes in each direction.
The 40 bridges in the area will be widened as well, and INDOT says additional bridge improvements are part of the plan, including complete replacements, deck replacements, deck overlays and painting. Plans also call for the replacement of drainage structures.
INDOT is also looking at potential modifications to the interchanges at U.S. 40 and U.S. 35/Williamsburg Pike to improve safety and mobility.
The department says specific improvements are still being developed. The project is currently in the environmental and preliminary design phase, which includes traffic analysis, maintenance of traffic plans, road design and survey work.
An overall cost of the project was not immediately provided.
“A public meeting is expected in early 2023 to share more information about the project and provide the opportunity for members of the public to ask questions and share their comments with members of the Project Team,” INDOT said in a news release. “Public input is an important part of project development.”
Details of the public meeting will be shared at a later date.
INDOT says construction could begin in late 2024, but a completion date will depend on project development, construction phasing and future funding.
