The facility is part of a $325 million expansion of the 86th Street campus on the city’s northwest side announced in May 2021. Ascension says the four-story hospital will help meet a “significant growth” in demand for dedicated neuroscience clinical spaces, and include eight operating rooms, 36 intensive care unit beds, and an intensive care step-down unit.
During the groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, Ascension St. Vincent Indiana CEO Jonathan Nalli said the hospital will create a regional destination for complex neurosurgical care.
“This facility will welcome patients with the most complex neurosurgical cases and serve as that training hub…for clinical leaders of the future,” said Nalli. “Our strategic partnership with Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine prioritizes clinical excellence, patient experience and innovation.”
Carmel-based Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine has been a longtime partner with Ascension St. Vincent and will be one of the medical groups staffing the hospital.
As part of that partnership, the hospital will include the establishment of a residence training program. Goodman Campbell President Dr. Jean-Pierre Mobasser says one of the company’s goals is to increase its academic and research footprint.
“Goodman Campbell has already started this process by developing a research relationship with Purdue University and an academic and teaching relationship with Marian University, and we plan to continue that here at this facility,” said Mobasser.
Ascension says the complex neurosurgical care at the new hospital will complement the existing Level I Trauma Center at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital, as well as the pediatric neurosurgery program.
The Brain and Spine Hospital is scheduled to open in 2024.
The $325 million expansion also includes a new, nearly 1,200-space parking garage that opened in September, as well as the new Ascension St. Vincent Women’s Hospital, which broke ground in July.
